A9 Search Now Powered by MSN
May 1st, 2006 by Alan Rabinowitz
In a strategic move in the battle for search presence, MSN has taken a victory and now powers Amazon.com’s search known as A9. A9 also uses Answers.com and integrates it into its search results, making it an experience as much as a search engine.
A9 is quite refreshing in the tedious and static appearance of the major search engines. Kind of like a breath of fresh air which seems welcome.
With 2005 Nielsen Net Ratings claiming A9 targets 0.1% of all online searches it hardly seems like a dent in Google’s dominance, yet we see a constant acceptance by Google as the MSN and Yahoo being considered threatening companies.
It remains to be seen whether this will effect the Authority domain status of Amazon.com and its dominance of the Google search results, as searching for any product will generally bring up Amazon.com in the natural results.
With another major updated possible in Sept. 2006, since Google historically uses this as the time for major algorithm changes, it will remain to be seen whether Amazon.com will gets its holiday dominance this year.
