You have no experience in how people use websites, where they look and how they navigate, you never took an art class, as a matter of fact art was your lowest grade in high school. So you decided to design your own website for your new business or a new product that could make you millions.
If you worked on Wall Street would you let an artist trade your stocks? Would you let them market your portfolio and invest in whatever companies they thought would be good, having no background? No, you wouldn't take the risk. So why would a website be any different? It wouldn't, what you need to do is just come to grips with the fact that you could be losing potential clients when they go to your website and it looks like a website did in 1996, when there was limited support by browsers for HTML and Javascript, and Flash did not even exist. Do you really think people will buy your product or use your service?
This is the biggest mistake of most companies today. They have great products and you can sometimes find their website, but when you get there it looks like your neighbors kids created the website. People instantly turn away and move on. Unless you have the only one-of-a-kind product or service and its worth its weight in gold, they will move on to a competitor who looks CREDIBLE. This is what you do not have now. Credibility and an ease of use. We visit hundreds of these websites daily and find them in all professions; real estate (the number one culprit of the worst self designed websites), medicine, software developers and the list goes on. We even visit professionally designed websites and can not figure out how to buy their products, or search their collection of products and all this company wanted to do is sell its product, so after we lost patience trying to find a buy now button, we went right on over to a competitor and purchased the product.
Is your business just not worth the expense of a professional web design? Is your product just a mediocre one that doesn't deserve to be showcased properly? You may think and in reality you may have the best product, but when people come in - they will not buy it from you. You can think what you like, "My product will sell no matter what it looks like, I know it will because its the best, and I have used them all." Think again. It does not work like that online. You need to promote and design with a company that has marketing experience behind it. You need a company that knows how to get websites to the top of the search engines. You need a good solid web presence. People need to know about your product or service. You must market it properly online, especially since the competition is so fierce.
